Microsoft’s New Teasers For Xbox Scorpio Might Contain Some Secret Messages – Forbes
E3 is almost upon us. There’s a bunch of news coming to the show but at this point, it’s looking like the biggest headlines will belong to the Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft’s version of the Xbox One complete with beefy hardware for all your 4K gaming needs, or at least so Microsoft says. The company has been shoveling coal onto the hype train for a while now, most recently with some teaser trailers that depict just how intense it’s going to be to sit down and play this thing very, apparently). But because the Internet is rife with amateur sleuths prone to picking trailers apart, it seems there might be some hidden messages in there as well.
In an image from one trailer, we see “6>4” written on a tent next to a Ferris wheel. Not only is this a totally factual statement (the alligator, you will recall, wants to eat the bigger number), but it’s also likely a reference to the Xbox Scorpio’s power advantage over the PlayStation 4 Pro. The Xbox Scorpio has 6 teraflops, the PS4 Pro has 4. Maybe there’s some significance to the Ferris wheel, or maybe it’s just a shiny light.
Another teaser contains a more cryptic, but potentially more revealing, hint. Posted to the Xbox UK Facebook page, it shows a series of numbers and letters on stage in front of a crowd of people, which isn’t totally unlike a product reveal. The numbers read “X10S101-317,” which Windows Central thinks could be a reference to the release date. In that theory, the “X10S” refers to the product model number, and the “101-317” refers to a release date of Friday, October 13, 2017. It helps that this is a totally plausible release date. It could also be nonsense or a coded message from outside the Matrix. I’m usually disinclined to believe such things, but these actually have the ring of truth to me: it just feels like the kind of thing Microsoft would do.
While the first one seems pretty straightforward, we’ll get our answer as to the veracity of the second one at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. The release date is one of the major outstanding questions at this point, along with actual form factor and, crucially, price. We already know quite a bit about the internals of the system thanks to a big reveal in cooperation with Digital Foundry, but it’s external factors that could wind up having a giant impact on how the console actually performs. Microsoft is also expected to spend the usual time talking about games both exclusive and otherwise, but the company has a lot of ground to make up on that front.
