The Grinch? Scrooge? These guys had nothing on internet trolls.

Cyber-bullying trollsĀ (I will neither refer to the groups by name, link to them, or designate them ‘hackers’) are threatening to use DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks to take down both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live this Christmas.

Why would they do such a mean-spirited thing on Christmas? Just because they can, it turns out, for the lulz. Crashing PSN and Xbox Live is fun, apparently, though it comes at the expense of others.

The threats comes on the heels of a DDoS attack that took down online gaming platform, Steam.

There’s not much to say beyond a few words of condemnation. It’s pretty lame, honestly, neither a symbolic gesture against say, corporate greed, nor particularly original or clever.

Keep an eye out, gamers, and here’s to hoping you have a very merry Christmas whatever happens. Hopefully Sony and Microsoft and their security partners can stay on top of this, though that means a lot of people will be working overtime on Christmas, which itself is a real shame.
